After the Wedding Q & A :: Corynn and Trey

Corynn and Trey had an incredibly picturesque wedding on the shores of Lake Michigan. Here's some advice from them concerning planning and the actual wedding day:

What is your best advice for a bride?:  Wedding planning can be extremely overwhelming.  If you don't have a wedding planner taking care of every last detail and instead choosing the DIY route that many brides are today, make sure to delegate tasks to people you can trust before the last minute scramble on the day of.  DO NOT be afraid to ask people for help (and then let go of the urge to micromanage).  If it's somebody close to you, chances are they're excited for your wedding and will feel honored that you asked them to be a part of the day.

West Coast Michigan Wedding

It feels very formal, but hold a meeting with friends and family and go over, point by point, exactly what you expect/need from them the day of (and make sure they take notes!).  Most importantly though, choose somebody a couple days before the big day to act as the wedding planner - making sure each detail falls into place.  There are a lot of elements that go into a wedding (music, photographer, favors, caterers, drinks, set ups, decorations, etc) and without somebody overseeing each thing to make sure it gets done (even though you've already delegated tasks), a lot can get forgotten.  Sit down with them the day before the wedding and go over a VERY DETAILED (down to 15 min increments if necessary) schedule of absolutely everything you want to happen.  For me, this was my brother-in-law.  He was great at directing everybody and making sure they were on task but best of all was that anybody who came to me for a last minute question or opinion (which EVERYONE did), I could send them to him because he understood exactly what I wanted.

Things will fall through the cracks or not go exactly according to plan but hopefully with so many eyes on it, it won't be anything major and nobody will even take notice.  (I'm sure you've already been told:  don't sweat the small stuff!)

How did you tame wedding day nerves?:  We had very small wedding parties (just 1 sister on either side), but I invited my best friends to be with me in the bridal suite all morning helping me get ready.  I also made sure when we booked the location that the bridal suite would be a very calming and beautiful area with tons of natural light so it really felt like a spa day.  I also (as mentioned above) had somebody taking care of all the last minute details so I didn't have to be dragged into the stress/chaos.  I just focused on getting ready and spending quality time with friends.  A mimosa (or in my case, sangria) can't hurt either!

What was your favorite photographic moment?:  There were really so so many.  We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful setting or sunset.  The photo that has become our "iconic wedding shot" is the one of us leaning in towards each other on the Adirondack chairs.

All of the photos from that moment were gorgeous with the sunset peaking through the trees.  I also loved when Trey and I went down on the beach just after sunset and it was just the two of us.

I really liked the photos that were between poses that you guys captured - the real moments that happen between clicks.  Little looks that you captured between me and Trey.

 There's so much love and such strong emotion that's captured in those pictures.  AND the one of me and my dad walking down the aisle.

I remember feeling so nervous, sad, and happy because of some things he said to me right before we walked and I kept looking up at him for reassurance. (Great, I'm crying now, haha). There are too many pictures to name that I absolutely love and cherish.

What is your best advice for a groom? (according to Trey): Have a glass of scotch.  A good scotch.  Remember - it's her wedding not yours.  Make sure to have an extra undershirt and dress shirt because you're going to be sweating a lot.  Have an extra 2 plates of everything served set aside for you and the bride because you will eat nothing as long as you're around everybody.  Try to at least say 'hi' to everybody because it will be such a whirlwind, before you know it the night will be over.

One extra insight: Another thing that we did that I really liked was the first look and then posed family pictures before the ceremony.  There was so much going on as soon as the ceremony was done and I felt an obligation to get out there and be with all the guests so it was nice to have that already out of the way.  The first look is really sweet/special too because it's something that happens just between the bride and groom (and photographer, haha).  And it doesn't in any way take away from the moment during the ceremony where you see each other for the first time.

After the Wedding Q & A :: Bridget & Jordan

Bridget and Jordan were married at St. Mary's Student Parish in Ann Arbor and had their reception at the University of Michigan League. Here's what Bridget and Jordan had to say about their day:

What is your best advice for a bride?: I think the best advice for a bride is to stay true to who she and her soon to be husband are. There are so many things that can become distracting when planning a wedding but as long as you stay true to who you are as couple and how you envision your day then everything will turn out perfectly!

What was your favorite photographic moment?: One of our most favorite photographic moments was taken right outside the League before walking into the reception. We were planning on walking right in but you stopped us and we kissed in front of the fountain. At that very moment a gust of wind came and blew my veil up in the air. It was such a natural photo and turned out so beautiful! I also had no memory of ever taking it so it was such a surprise when we saw it!

What did you like most about working with Chelsea Brown Photography?: We loved working with you because you put us at ease. You let us be who we were but also directed us in a way that allowed us to create beautiful wedding photos. We didn't worry about a thing on the day of our wedding and hardly even noticed you were there! You were so professional and created amazing, beautiful work!

What is your best advice for keeping things on schedule when the day is so busy?: I think it helped a lot to create a very detailed time schedule leading up to the day of the wedding but always reminding myself that it was OK if things didn't follow the exact plan.

More importantly it was helpful to share the time schedule and plans with other people who were a part of our day so they could be the ones watching the clock and moving things along if our schedule got delayed. This allowed me to never have to look at a clock or worry about the schedule because I knew others were helping do that for me!

After the Wedding Q & A :: Lauren & Jeremy

Lauren & Jeremy had a lovely intimate wedding on Beaver Island in Northern Michigan. Here is what Lauren and Jeremy had to say about their big day:

What was your favorite photographic moment?: We loved all of our wedding photos but there was one that is, by far, our favorite. Later on into the evening when everyone was dancing Chelsea asked us if we wanted to sneak away for a nighttime picture. She set us up on a hill with the venue above us and the beach below us. It was dark out so I really know how it was going to turn out but the result was absolutely amazing! We were both blown away by Chelsea’s vision!

What did you like most about working with Chelsea Brown Photography?: I found Chelsea from searching the internet for local photographers and fell in love with her style. I was so nervous to meet her because taking gorgeous photos is one thing but I also wanted someone who I got along with and could trust. My husband and I really got to know Chelsea when she shot our engagement photos (which I highly recommend! It was a great way for everyone to get to know each other. Also, for my husband who had never been in a wedding party before, it was a wonderful way to get him prepared for a full day of photos at our wedding!) She was so incredibly professional but still fun and relaxed which sealed the deal for us. We actually picked our wedding date based on when she was available because we knew it had to be her.

Ann Arbor Engagement Session

On the day of the wedding Chelsea found the perfect balance of direction and spontaneity. We have some amazing posed pictures of the wedding party as well as great candid photos that I didn't even know she was taking. We also had multiple wedding attendees that commented on how nice and professional Chelsea and her assistant were. I have to say, the thing I liked most about working with Chelsea was by far our amazing pictures. We had high expectations and Chelsea exceeded them!

What advice was given to you that helped you get through the day? / How did you tame wedding day nerves?: My answer combines both questions! The best advice that I got that helped tame my nerves all day was actually from my husband!  The morning of the wedding I was anxious about everything going as planned and worried that I forgot something. Right before he left to go get ready with the groomsmen he hugged me and said “Whatever happens today, it’s going to be you and me at the altar getting married and that’s what is important!”  It really helped to put everything in perspective and allowed to me enjoy every minute leading up to the most important one!

Beaver Island Wedding

What is your best advice for keeping things on schedule when the day is so busy?: About a month before the wedding I made a rough schedule of what we would be doing and when for the Big Day. As I finalized plans and spoke to each vendor I made changes and got a better idea of how things would go. I gave everyone involved a copy of the schedule and made sure to give ourselves lots of extra time. I really wanted everyone involved to have a stress free day and not feel rushed.
