Skipping the First Look? Pre-Wedding Connection Hacks for Those Nervous Butterflies

So, the big day is creeping closer, and those pre-wedding jitters are starting to bubble up.  You're both a bundle of nervous excitement, and maybe the idea of a traditional "first look" doesn't quite fit your vibe. No worries! Here are some creative ways to connect with your partner before the ceremony, all without actually seeing each other.

Love Letters, the Old-Fashioned Way: Ditch the texts and emails, and unleash your inner Jane Austen with a handwritten note. Pour your heart out, reminisce about your favorite memories together, or write a silly poem – the point is to express your love in a tangible way.  Imagine the surprise when your partner discovers this sweet surprise tucked away in their dressing room.

Gift Giving with a Twist:  Gifts are always a lovely gesture, but take it a step further and personalize it with a hidden message.  Think a vintage book with a handwritten inscription on the inside page, a framed photo of a special moment with a sweet note attached, or a piece of jewelry with a meaningful inscription. Engraved Shinola watches are a common but very useful gift, for example. Photographing these moments are usually some of my favorites from the getting ready portion of the day.

Will You Hold My Hand?: Have someone guide you both to a designated spot, say around a corner or behind a slightly closed door.  Then, reach out and connect. Simply hand holding or just talking can do a lot to calm those pre-ceremony jitters – it's all about feeling each other's presence and excitement in a unique way.

A couple holds hands around a corner so they don't see each other before the ceremony.

Love is Blind:  This one requires a bit of trust (and maybe a helpful bridesmaid or groomsman). Have your trusty assistant blindfold you both and lead you to a quiet spot. There, you can hug, hold hands, dance it out- whatever feels good to hopefully shake out those nervous feelings. It’s all the enjoyment of being with your person without spoiling the surprise completely.

Remember, the most important thing is to find a way that feels authentic to you as a couple.  So, ditch the pressure and get creative!  Building anticipation and expressing your love in a unique way can be just as, if not more, special than a traditional first look.

Happy Planning!
